The Study of MIS / CIS

  • Salaries for entry level positions range from $35,000 up to 60, 000 annually. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov).
  • CIS largely consists of ways to effectively use computer systems to achieve an organization’s goals or objectives. Students concentrating in CIS must have an understanding of both the principles of computer technology and the principles of management.
  • Consider getting certified by Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, CompTIA, ISACA, ITIL, etc. These certifications further validate ones understanding of a particular knowledge area and it indicates the completion of additional learning beyond traditional classroom theory in acquiring the knowledge required to perform at a specified IT professional level. Certifications also prove to an employer or client that ones expertise is confirmed by a recognized industry organization.
  • Becoming certified can increase starting salaries, enhance skills and increase ones employment marketability.
  • Myth: Most CIS jobs are being outsourced to other countries.
  • Reality: There are job opportunities for CIS graduates. It is a myth that all IT jobs are going overseas. Most CIS jobs require close interaction with customers, colleagues, or clients and therefore are not likely to be outsourced.  The CIS jobs that are most likely to get outsourced are those that involve little or no interaction with people or existing systems.
