English 4343-40 Advanced Style, Grammar, & Editing

Welcome to Advanced Grammar!

This rhetoric track course offers in-depth
study of Standard American English and the culture in which it is practiced, taught, upheld, adapted, and subverted within different rhetorical situations. English 4343 emphasizes style, grammar, and editing through discussions of the history of the English language, practice in stylistic revision, and
formal grammar instruction including diagramming. Students will also examine the
effects of stylistic choices on delivery and reception. The course is designed to be
useful to those who plan to teach English as well as those who simply want to enhance
their own writing skills. English 4343 can be applied to either writing concentration.

English 4343 allows students to explore language and its rhetorical patterns, preparing
them to become effective teachers of grammar or simply better writers who are more
aware of how language is used in their environment. Students will engage in several
assignments ranging from written homework to book reviews to teaching presentations.
Because language occurs most often within a social context, you will be asked to
participate actively in class discussion, to present information orally, and to participate
in groups to complete collaborative assignments. Microteaching presentations are
components of each student’s evaluation.
