Wesleyan Table Tennis Continues To Impress

FORT WORTH, Texas
Oct. 2004

The Texas Wesleyan table tennis team competed in the
Southern California Open.  The team also defeated Ben Hill Sporting Club from Atlanta, Ga. in junior varsity and varsity team matches this past weekend.

At the Southern California Open in San Diego, Calif., junior Eric Owens took home first-place honors in the Open division.  Owens defeated Ludovic Gombos from Romania, 4-2, in the semifinals and then took out Juan Carlos Acosta from Peru, 4-2, in the championship match.  The victory was Owens' first on the North American Tour tournament since he joined Wesleyan's squad three years ago.

Sophomore Biljana Golic took home second-place honors in Women's singles. The Wesleyan sophomore lost in the championship match to Huang Yao Xi from China, 4-3.  Golic held a 3-1 advantage before falling in three straight
games.  She also competed in the Open division, which forced her to play 15 matches in one day, and eventually lose at the end because of pure exhaustion.

Freshman Kfir Silberman finished tied for third place in the Open division. The newcomer lost in the semifinals to Ludovic Gombos from Romania, 4-0.

Against Ben Hill Sporting Club, Texas Wesleyan's varsity won, 7-3, while the junior varsity defeating the Georgians, 8-2. In the varsity event, Silberman won both of his singles matches, while freshman Dinko Kranjac, who was fresh off of his championship victory in Wesleyan's Fall Open Tournament, defeated Ben Hill's No. 1 player but fell to its No. 2 player.  Sophomore Courtney Roberts split his two singles matches, which included a disqualification against Lee McCool from Ben Hill. Roberts teamed with Kranjac to win in doubles, while Wesleyan assistant coach and team member Keith Evans split a pair of singles matches for the
final, 7-3 margin.

In the junior varsity event, freshman Abdul Rahman Khan won two singles events and teamed with sophomore Sabrina Worrell to take home victory in a doubles match as well.  Worrell, who has been plagued with a shoulder
injury, lost both of her singles matches.  Freshman Aldis Presley took home victories in his two singles matches, defeating Wesleyan assistant coach Evans' wife, Johnese and Presley's younger brother, Micha.  Freshman David
Livings also defeated the same two participants in singles matches for the final margin, 8-2.

The Texas Wesleyan Table Tennis team will be back in action this Friday when they host Baylor at 6 p.m., SMU at 7 p.m. and UT-Tyler at 8 p.m.  All matches will take place at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium
