The Texas Wesleyan table tennis team competed in the
Southern California Open. The team also defeated Ben Hill
Sporting Club from Atlanta, Ga. in junior varsity and varsity
team matches this past weekend.
At the Southern California Open in San Diego, Calif., junior
Eric Owens took home first-place honors in the Open division.
Owens defeated Ludovic Gombos from Romania, 4-2, in the
semifinals and then took out Juan Carlos Acosta from Peru,
4-2, in the championship match. The victory was Owens' first
on the North American Tour tournament since he joined
Wesleyan's squad three years ago.
Sophomore Biljana Golic took home second-place honors in
Women's singles. The Wesleyan sophomore lost in the
championship match to Huang Yao Xi from China, 4-3. Golic
held a 3-1 advantage before falling in three straight
games. She also competed in the Open division, which forced
her to play 15 matches in one day, and eventually lose at the
end because of pure exhaustion.
Freshman Kfir Silberman finished tied for third place in the
Open division. The newcomer lost in the semifinals to Ludovic
Gombos from Romania, 4-0.
Against Ben
Hill Sporting Club, Texas Wesleyan's varsity won, 7-3, while
the junior varsity defeating the Georgians, 8-2. In the
varsity event, Silberman won both of his singles matches,
while freshman Dinko Kranjac, who was fresh off of his
championship victory in Wesleyan's Fall Open Tournament,
defeated Ben Hill's No. 1 player but fell to its No. 2
player. Sophomore Courtney Roberts split his two singles
matches, which included a disqualification against Lee McCool
from Ben Hill. Roberts teamed with Kranjac to win in doubles,
while Wesleyan assistant coach and team member Keith Evans
split a pair of singles matches for the
final, 7-3 margin.
In the junior varsity event, freshman Abdul Rahman Khan won
two singles events and teamed with sophomore Sabrina Worrell
to take home victory in a doubles match as well. Worrell, who
has been plagued with a shoulder
injury, lost both of her singles matches. Freshman Aldis
Presley took home victories in his two singles matches,
defeating Wesleyan assistant coach Evans' wife, Johnese and
Presley's younger brother, Micha. Freshman David
Livings also defeated the same two participants in singles
matches for the final margin, 8-2.
The Texas Wesleyan Table Tennis team will be back in action
this Friday when they host Baylor at 6 p.m., SMU at 7 p.m. and
UT-Tyler at 8 p.m. All matches will take place at the Sid
Richardson Gymnasium.
